The Canyon Rim Visitor Center in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve will be closed for several months as it undergoes renovations. The visitor center, which is the park’s busiest visitor contact station, will close Jan. 1, 2024, and undergo an extensive renovation that is expected to last through early March, according to the National Park Service. The upgrade, which is the first to the facility since it opened in 1991, will bring new exhibits, a new sales area, carpeting, lighting, wall coverings and new seating for the auditorium. The new exhibits are expected to include displays on the three distinct sections of the park: Gauley River National Recreation Area, Bluestone National Scenic River and New River Gorge area. Sandstone Visitor Center on the southern end of the park will remain open.
