Magistrate resigns ahead of election and there’s no opponent on the ballot

A Kanawha County Magistrate abruptly resigned from his position on Friday.
Mike Ferrell, who has served as a magistrate for nearly one four-year term, submitted his resignation via email to Kanawha County Chief Circuit Judge Maryclaire Akers late Friday afternoon. Ferrell is still on the ballot to run for reelection to the Division 7 seat in this year’s election. As of Saturday, he had no opponent. Jan. 27 is the last day for candidates to file to run in the election. Akers will be responsible for appointing a replacement to Ferrell’s seat.
