A study published by Nature Cities shows nearly half of U.S. cities are predicted to see a decrease in their population by 2100. West Virginia has many communities on the list at risk of major depopulation, with only Vermont being more affected. The researchers didn’t pinpoint a definitive reason for the potential population declines, but said factors including economic shifts, youth migration and aging infrastructure could contribute. Mobility and infrastructure should be top priorites for future development, according to the study.
