A fire on New River Gorge land destroys a special building

The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is investigating a fire that happened last Thursday. The fire destroyed a historic barn at the Richmond-Hamilton farmsite along River Road between Hinton and Sandstone Falls, a site that had been selected to be featured during the park’s 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. According to the National Park Service, the barn was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and was one of two at the site built from chestnut with hand-hewn logs. Tips about the fire may be submitted to NPS.
