The Buffalo Creek disaster, a devastating flood that killed 125 people and destroyed hundreds of homes, marked its 52nd anniversary Monday. A sludge dam on the Middle Fork of Buffalo Creek in Logan County gave way on Feb. 26, 1972, and 16 surrounding communities were destroyed or partially destroyed by the massive flood. In all, 507 houses were lost or demolished; 44 mobile homes were destroyed; 273 houses were severely damaged; and nearly 663 more houses suffered some type of damage. Property damage was estimated at more than $50 million while highway damage was more than $15 million.
