A statute to honor the late Woody Williams could be headed to the US Capitol. A resolution passed the West Virginia Legislature that aims to replace a West Virginian statue in the U.S. Capitol with a statue of WWII Medal of Honor Recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams. The Woody Williams statute would either replace the statue of U.S. Senator John Kenna – the town of Kenna’s namesake, or Francis Pierpont – one of the state’s founders. Williams died at the age of 98 in 2022, and was named a Distinguished West Virginian for his military service and the work he did with veterans. The non-profit Woody Williams Foundation exists in his honor.
