Recent accident brings railroad crossing safety issues to the forefront

According to West Virginia State Police, a Norfolk Southern train hit a man driving across the railroad tracks. It happened on Bittersweet Lane in Naugatuck. Eyewitness News reported that the man who was hit was on his way to Naugatuck Church of God Sunday when he got hit. WVSP say Maynard had to be air lifted to St. Mary’s Hospital. This particular crossing does not have guard arms, only stop signs and crossbucks. Norfolk Southern told Eyewitness News their investigation found the train’s horn did sound in advance of the train’s approach.
Norfolk Southern said the crossing is a private crossing and a decision to install warning devices is up to the owner of the road. Then, the railroad would partner with the owner to install and maintain the devices.
