Trout stocking to continue under a new plan

Trout stockings are making a return to the Mountain State following an agreement between state and federal leaders. The announcement follows a funding hurdle encountered earlier this year that prohibited the state from using federal grants to stock waterways. The new agreement will allow the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources to reinstate stocking in previously closed waters, according to a news release from the Governor’s Office: In January, the decision was made to remove the waters from a rotation for stocking due to concern of trout endangered species. A compromise will require a trout food habitat study to protect species such as the Candy Darter and Big Sandy Crayfish. The news release said 20 additional streams will be stocked in May.
