WWII veteran earns his high school diploma

A very special high school graduation was held in Clay County on Friday, when a 99-year-old World War II veteran got a diploma. World War II cut 99-year-old Charles ” Birdy ” Bird was drafted out of high school at age 18 and never got to graduate. At the special ceremony Bird got his diploma. He’s one of the only four World War II vets in Clay County still alive, and he’s doing very well. A program called Operation Recognition run by state education officials and West Virginia Veteran’s Council made it possible for Bird to finally get that diploma.
