Idled Weirton plant could put people back to work under new cirucumstances

Just 3 days after the idling of the Cleveland Cliffs Plant in Weirton, there are now new talks into the plant’s future. Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves announced he’s in talks with transformer manufacturer ERMCO to potentially start back up the recently idled tin mill facility to make transformers. Eyewitness News said Cliffs currently has a transformer-grade steel facility in Butler, Pa., and there aren’t many others in the country. USW 2911 President Mark Glyptis says the announcement is a very positive step for the workforce in Weirton, especially as it could bring 800-1,000 jobs back. Financing will have to be secured first.
