Park Place movie theater closes and the City aims to help find a new tenant

A longtime cinema in the Kanawha Valley closed this week. Park Place Stadium Cinemas posted a message on social media announcing its closure, after being in business for 43 years. The cinema’s owners cited declining business and the high cost of necessary upgrades for the closure. The owners said they hope to find a buyer who would be able to reopen it. Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said in a statement Tuesday that the city will begin looking for a new tenant in the building. The city had made improvements to the building in recent years, including major upgrades to its parking garage. Eyewitness News reported that the Park Place owners confirmed that they had also closed a movie theater in Cincinnati, Ohio, last week.
