Staffing situation at the WV Dept. of Corrections has improved

West Virginia Divisoin of Corrections commissioner William Marshall said Tuesday that the West Virginia National Guard is no longer needed to cover vacancies in jails and prisons as of May 10. Nearly 350 guard members have spent time helping cover open positions after Gov. Jim Justice declared a state of emergency for West Virginia’s jails and prisons in 2017. Since then, a reduced role for the National Guard has been linked to improved pay and recruitment efforts.
