Disability payments are approved for former Charleston Police Chief

The Charleston Police Department Pension and Relief Fund board ruled Friday that James “Tyke” Hunt was disabled and that his disability was the result of an off-duty injury. As a result of the ruling, Hunt will receive $6,038.40 a month beginning July 1. He is entitled to 60% of his pay. John Dascoli is a Charleston attorney who serves as the pension fund attorney for Charleston Police. He said that while the four-member board made up of former and current police officers voted on declaring Hunt disabled, he said that decision comes first from medical professionals, and the board has to abide. Eyewitness News reported Hunt will soon complete 20 years with the department but can’t draw retirement until he turns 50. He can immediately draw retirement under a disability pension regardless of age.
