A man accused in the shooting death of a Nicholas County deputy pleaded guilty Tuesday morning before his trial was set to get underway. Brent Kelly of Birch River accepted the plea deal as jury selection was set to get underway on Tuesday morning. The shooting happened in June 2022 and Nicholas County deputy Thomas Baker was killed. The indictment said Kelly acted with Richie Holcomb, who was fatally shot during a shootout with law enforcement. Deputies said the pair were talking with law enforcement outside of a camper but became uncooperative and barricaded themselves inside the RV before the deadly shootout unfolded.
