FAA hosts meetings to discuss Charleston airport’s expansion

The Federal Aviation Administration held two meetings in Charleston this week to address a paused runway extension project at West Virginia International Yeager Airport. Projects aim to modernize the airport’s 77-year-old terminal by adding five gate concourses to accommodate a new fleet of aircrafts. Eyewitness News reported that the FAA officials intends to create an environmental impact statement in order to secure funding for the projects. The FAA and airport sponsors have elected to re-enter the planning phase and analyze runway improvements, which may result in changes to the original proposals. Some in the area have opposed the runway extension, which would affect hundreds of acres of nearby Coonskin Park, including shelters and hiking trails.
