Kanawha County Sheriff warns residents of a new phone scam

Deputies in Kanawha County are warning residents of a new phone scam making the rounds. Multiple residents have reported receiving calls from someone claiming the recipient has missed a federal court appearance leading to $2,400 in fines, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer then instructs the recipients to go to an area Kroger and obtain a cashier’s check from a kiosk. The scammer allegedly warns that a Kanawha County sheriff named “Jeff Meadows” would execute a warrant if the demands aren’t met. The sheriff’s office reminded residents that this is not how it conducts business and citizens should never send money or other payments to anyone claiming to be law enforcement without taking steps to verify the call.
