Two people, including a woman in a wheelchair, managed to escape a Charleston apartment fire that killed a pet and threatened to spread through a West Side neighborhood Monday morning. Charleston firefighters spotted smoke well before they rolled up on the burning apartment that fronts an alley near Sixth Street. Flames quickly made their way through a common attic into another home. A pet cat was killed in the fire.
