The federal government wants coal companies owned by Gov. Jim Justice and his family held in contempt. The motion was filed in federal court this week, noting the companies still owe more than half a million dollars, a couple of months after the debt was supposed to be paid off. In 2019, the U.S. sued to collect five years’ worth of unpaid Mine Safety and Health Administration civil penalties and set up monthly payments of $102,000 to have the debt paid by March 1, 2024. The federal government wants the court to hold them in civil contempt.
