Navy Lieutenant’s remains are accounted for decades after his death

A West Virginia man has been accounted for, 79 years after his death. U.S. Navy Reserve Lieutenant Jay R. Manown Jr. of Kingwood, was 26 years old when his plane was shot down during WW II. Manown was an aviator assigned to Navy Torpedo Squadron 20 and was conducting air strikes against enemy targets in the Palau Islands when the plane was shot down, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Scientists used “anthropological and circumstantial” analysis, along with a DNA analysis to identify Manown’s remains, according to a news release from the DPAA. Manown’s remains will be buried on Oct. 29, 2024, in Kingwood.
