New surcharge approved for power companies

West Virginia regulators authorized rate modifications Tuesday for two power companies in order for coal-fired, electric-generating plants to comply with federal environmental standards. Surcharge increases for Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power will total $35.6 million, according to a news release from the West Virginia Public Service Commission. The news release said the financing will allow internal modifications for John Amos, Mountaineer and Mitchell power plants required by federal officials. The PSC said rates become effective Sept. 1.
