Two state agencies are partnering for an erosion mitigation project at a Kanawha County veterans’ cemetery. The West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance and Division of Highways are working to protect burial sites at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar. A new release said dirt, topsoil and sod will be added to area two of the cemetery to raise ground and replace land that has been washed away by rainfall. Veterans and families in the area will not be moved or disturbed. Headstones in the area will be temporarily removed and GPS records will be used to reinstall them after maintenance is complete. The agencies expect the work to be complete within two months.
