DNA evidence leads to positive ID in a 2022 death

Deputies released new developments in an investigation involving a Kanawha County woman who went missing in 2022. Human remains located by West Virginia State Police in Boone County in fall 2022 have been identified as those of 26-year-old Alyssa Smith. A news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s office said deputies worked with the West Virginia Fusion Center and the Marshall University Forensic Laboratory to test DNA of the remains. Deputies have urged anyone with information related to the investigation to contact the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office at 304-357-0556.
