Student at a Mason County school makes threats with a gun found in custodian’s vehicle

A Mason County school custodian was arrested after bringing an unsecured gun to a school, prosecutors said. John H. Kauff, Jr.,of Hartford, was detained by police after an 11-year-old student at New Haven Elementary School threatened to shoot himself and another student with a weapon from Kauff’s vehicle on Thursday, according to the Mason County Prosecuting Attorney. Law enforcement obtained a search warrant for Kauff’s vehicle, which was parked at the school where he worked, and they found a firearm that was not legally secured. Eyewitness News said prosecutors have begun the process of juvenile detention for the student that made the initial threat.
