Putnam County Commissioner Steve Deweese resigned following an investigation into misappropriation of funds during his time as the county’s sheriff. Deweese was elected to the commission in Nov. 2022 for a six-year term that would have ended in 2028. According to Deweese’s attorney, David Moye, Deweese has agreed to enter an information plea on a misdemeanor charge of fraudulent schemes. Eyewitness News said, as part of the deal Deweese agreed to resign from office and never seek public office again in the future. The investigation centered around roughly $4,000 that Deweese “misappropriated,” according to Moye, during a four-year period as sheriff from 2017 to 2020. Moye said he would describe Deweese’s handling of the money as “bad judgment.”
