The high school football playoffs for all four classes in West Virginia have been postponed due to ongoing litigation. The move comes as injunction requests have been filed over the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission’s rating formula used to rank and seed teams for the playoffs. Several teams claimed they received less points in the ratings due to reclassification changes before the season that resulted in some teams on their schedules being reclassified to a lower class. Those schools would have received less points for playing and/or beating those teams in a lower class, thus affecting their playoff ranking. The matter could ultimately be settled by West Virginia’s Supreme Court. The first round of playoff matchups was set to get underway this weekend. George Washington and Capitol High School are two of several county schools in the playoffs. The state championship was set to be played at Laidley Field in Charleston December 6-7, but they expect it to be moved back at least by one week.
