Interim meetings include discussions about how to fix the foster care system

Lawmakers gathered in Monday’s interim health meeting to talk about how they could improve the foster care system in West Virginia. Some of the key issues were lack of funding, inadequate staffing and an overall lack of resources. West Virginia currently leads the nation with 6,000 children in its child welfare system; four times as much as the following state. Eyewitness News said lawmakers are considering three draft bills that could provide some relief, such as vouchers for children’s clothing, pay raises for guardian ad litems and allow for more transparency to make sure children are in safe environments.
