Two schools in Wayne County face consolidation

Two elementary schools are on the radar of the Wayne County School Board as school leaders prepare next year’s budget. Education officials are still crunching the numbers as they grapple with the decision to close or consolidate the schools. Dunlow and Genoa Elementary each have less than 100 students, but board members believes these two schools could be the answer to declining enrollment.”Positions are tied to schools,” Wayne County School Superintendent Todd Alexander explained. “We lost approximately 120 students this year for our enrollment numbers. What that does it lessens the number of positions the state is going to pay for.” Alexander said the school system has had declining enrollment for more than 20 years. Some schools have a replication of services, such as Dunlow Elementary and Genoa Elementary and consolidating the two schools may save money.
