West Virginia is among several states facing an elevated risk of wildfires due to dry conditions and gusty winds, according to AccuWeather. The state, along with parts of the Midwest and West Coast, is experiencing abnormally dry conditions and drought, making it susceptible to fire outbreaks. “A single spark can ignite a fire that can quickly spread out of control,” said AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok. “This combination of dried-out leaves and gusty winds is a recipe for trouble.” The National Drought Monitor reports that 27 percent of the country is in severe drought, including portions of West Virginia.
