Cassie Johnson’s legacy lives on four years after her death

Tuesday marked four years since Charleston officer Cassie Johnson died in the line of duty. Johnson was shot on Dec. 1, 2020, by Joshua Phillips while responding to a parking complaint on Garrison Avenue. She was able to return fire and wound Phillips, who was arrested nearby shortly after. Johnson died two days later on Dec. 3, 2020, in a Charleston area hospital. Charleston Police Chief Scott Dempsey honored Johnson in a statement Tuesday, saying her service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. In 2021, Garrison Avenue was honorarily renamed Patrolman Cassie Johnson Avenue. A memorial scholarship fund has also since been established.
