A man accused of secretly recording a foreign exchange student in Cabell County appeared in court Monday. Darrel Wells, of Barboursville, was set to plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts of criminal invasion, but Eyewitness News said lawyers and prosecutors could not reach an agreement on the sentencing. Under the plea agreement, Wells’ two felony counts of employment or use of a minor to produce obscene matter would be dismissed. A new plea hearing was scheduled for Dec. 18. Investigators said Wells secretly recorded a foreign exchange student he was housing in her bedroom and bathroom for nine months. The 17-year-old came to Cabell County from South America to attend school. Prosecutors said the victim, who is back home in South America, and her civil attorney agreed to the plea deal.
