Former Putnam County Commissioner Steve Deweese pleaded guilty Monday in an investigation into misappropriation of funds. Eyewitness News said Deweese pleaded guilty to misdemeanor fraudulent schemes by diverting $4,000 meant to pay for a deputy sheriff’s calendar while he was serving as Putnam County sheriff. The former commissioner and sheriff faces up to a year in jail and pay restitution. He is set to be sentenced on Feb. 12 in Charleston. Deweese was elected to the commission in November 2022 for a six-year term that would have ended in 2028. As part of the deal, Deweese agreed to resign from office and never seek public office again in the future. He resigned from the position in November. Putnam County commissioners told Eyewitness News they are interviewing candidates to replace Deweese this week.
