Wind gusts topple the Christmas tree at the State Capitol

The 54-foot Norwood Spruce that was supposed to arrive from Watoga State Park in Pocahontas County last week came a few days late because it wouldn’t fit on the truck, but the huge tree made it to Charleston this week. 50 mph wind gust toppled the tree Wednesday night into Thursday morning, but crews have been working to put it back up on the Capitol lawn. Governor Jim Justice and the First Lady hosted the Joyful Night celebration at the state capitol on Wednesday. Other trees at the Capitol Complex honor Gold Star Mothers, the Armed Forces and First Responders.
