A man is dead following a shooting early Sunday morning on Charleston’s East End. Charleston Police were called to the scene around 3:50 a.m. in the 400 block of Elizabeth Street. 44-year old Ethan Samuel Chic-Colbert of St. Albans was found shot to death inside a car. Charleston Fire Department first responders attempted life saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Lt. Tony Hazelett said in a news release that witnesses said a man wearing dark clothing went up to Chic-Colbert’s car and fired several rounds as he was sitting in the driver’s seat. The shooter then took off on foot.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 304-348-6480. Chic-Colbert was convicted in a high-profile child death case in 2012 and sentenced to six to 30 years in prison after his girlfriend’s son was hit by a car on I-77 and later died. The boy, Jahlil Clements, who was 11, was hit by the car as he tried to flag down help for his mother, who was being beaten by Chic-Colbert. Eyewitness News said Chic-Colbert became eligible for parole after serving six years of his sentence. It is not clear when he was released from prison.
