Fire risk is high in Huntington’s vacant buildings

A fire at an abandoned apartment building on the 2700 block of Fifth Avenue in Huntington early Tuesday morning has been linked to homelessness. The Huntington Fire Department nor the city fire marshal have confirmed what started the blaze, but Mayor Patrick Farrell said he believes people were sleeping in the building overnight to try and stay warm, according to Eyewitness News. Farrell was inaugurated into the new role as the mayor of Huntington only days ago, and vows to tackle the homeless issue. Regarding the fire, City council woman Ally Layman said on social media she wants to avoid perpetuating stigmas. Layman tried to refocus the discussion on providing shelters and helping those in need.
