GWHS student succumbs to cancer

On the same day thousands of students across Kanawha County wore yellow and gold to show their support for one of their own, a teenager who was bravely battling cancer passed away. Maddox Potter, 16, of Charleston attended George Washington High School. He was diagnosed with cancer in December 2023 and had recently made the decision to stop chemotherapy treatments after his mother said he understood how limited his options were and how they would only continue to keep him away from home. Said his mother “This is not giving up. This is him choosing to spend his remaining time at his home, surrounded by a family and a community that loves him dearly. We should all be so brave and wise.” his mother said, also noting her son’s favorite Bible verse, Romans 8:18. “The pain you are feeling now cannot compare to the joy you will feel later.”
