Winter storm causes power outages and accidents

Thousands were without power in West Virginia and Kentucky on Monday due to the winter storm. More than 36,000 Appalachian Power customers in West Virginia were reporting outages as of 6:45 a.m. Monday. That included more than 5,700 in Kanawha County. Mercer County had the most customer outages at the time with more than 8,700. State of emergencies were issued in West Virginia and Kentucky. A crash shut down the southbound lanes of the West Virginia Turnpike Sunday evening along Interstate 77 at mile marker 87. Dozens of accidents were reported around the area.
