A thief trying to steal a transformer causes a power outage

Deputies are investigating a theft and vandalism of a utility pole in Kanawha County that led to power outages and thousands of dollars in damages. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office said a power outage was reported about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday along Derricks Creek Road where Appalachian Power workers found a transformer severely damaged. Investigators found burglary tools and evidence that someone had scaled the pole and tried remove the transformer by unbolting it. They couldn’t do it, and left wires dangling. Similar criminal activities are under investigation in Jackson County.
