A Kanawha County Circuit Court Judge is ordering state officials to come to court and explain how housing foster children in hotels is a safe and appropriate solution. Judge Maryclaire Akers issued an administrative order Monday after she said an attorney in an abuse and neglect case made her aware that a child who had been placed in a hotel by CPS had attempted suicide. Akers said the court is aware of other incidents regarding juveniles in hotel placements. Eyewitness News said Akers ordered newly appointed DoHS Cabinet Secretary Alex Mayer, any of his designees and Kanawha County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Mandy Pellegrin to appear at a hearing this Friday, February 28, to decide if the placements are safe for children.
