Huntington building considered a safety threat is torn down

The City of Huntington began the demolition of a building on Wednesday that city officials said was a public safety threat after it caught fire last month. A blaze broke out at the abandoned apartment complex located along the 2700 block of 5th Avenue on Jan 7. While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, Eyewitness News said authorities found evidence that the building was inhabited by trespassers. The fire caused a partial collapse of the building with evidence pointing to additional trespassers following the damaging blaze, according to a post from the City of Huntington. Mayor Patrick Farrell, following a request from Fire Marshals and consultation from Chief Building Inspector Todd Darst and the city’s legal department, ordered the building to be destroyed. A post said that the city will be seeking restitution from the property owners.
