Parents of accused Boone County administrator plead guilty to financial crime

The parents of a former administrator accused of defrauding Boone County Schools of millions of dollars have pleaded guilty to financial crime. Eyewitness News reported Michael P. Barker and Lana Barker both of Foster, pleaded guilty to structuring transactions with one or more domestic financial institutions, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia. In November 2023, 11 cash deposits ranging from $8,000 to $9,500 were arranged by the Barkers to avoid currency reporting requirements. Financial institutions are required to report cash deposits of more than $10,000. Prosecutors said the cash deposits arranged by the Barkers totaled $97,215. The Barkers used that money, along with a $30,000 bank loan and another $50,000 from their son, former Boone County Schools maintenance director Michael David Barker, to buy property in Foster, according to prosecutors. Sentencing is set for July 1.
