Driver charged after a worker is killed on I-77

A worker who was struck by a tractor-trailer Monday along Interstate 77 in Kanawha County has died. It happened just before 11 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 77 about four miles before the Marmet exit,. Troopers said the worker was an employee of the West Virginia Parkways Authority. A news release from the West Virginia Department of Transportation said the worker was part of a Turnpike work crew that was patching the center section of the roadway. The driver of the tractor-trailer swerved to avoid the work zone area, but the trailer swung into the path of the worker and struck him. Eyewitness News said the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with authorities. West Virginia State Police are investigating and reviewing footage from an onboard camera on the tractor-trailer.
