Enrollment numbers only will determine a school’s classification this fall

High school athletics officials approved changes this week to the state’s sports classification structure for the coming school year. The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission’s Board of Control voted 150-0 in favor of passing a proposal setting the enrollment figure for each classification in the state. Eyewitness News said the total enrollment figures of grades 9-12 will determine which class a school will be in. Class AAAA will include schools with 1,050 students or more; Class AAA will be for schools with between 625 and 1,049 students; Class AA with student numbers from 351 to 624; and Class A with 350 or less. The change moves away from a model that was used in 2024-25 that considered enrollment, location and economics as part of the classification formula.
