A former Boone County Schools official pleaded guilty Monday in a $3.4 million fraud case. Michael Barker of Foster pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud after prosecutors said he used his position to falsify documents that led to the school system being defrauded of approximately $3.4 million. Prosecutors said Barker placed orders for nearly 5,000 cases of hand soap with co-conspirator Jesse Marks’ company, but the school system would only receive a little more than 800 cases. Barker and Marks are accused of overbilling the Boone County school system and splitting the profits, of which Barker received about $2 million. Eyewitness News said Barker faces up to 20 years in prison and will be forced to repay $3.4 million in restitution as well as forfeiting $1.6 million in assets when he is sentenced on July 31.
