The West Virginia Department of Agriculture wants residents to be aware of the Spotted Lanternfly. The invasive insect from Asia has been spreading across the U.S., and it’s been found in West Virginia. It’s been reported in 16 West Virginia counties, mostly in the northern part of the state, in places like Morgantown, Clarksburg and Parkersburg. The Spotted Lanternfly lays eggs in batches on smooth surfaces like tree trunks, cars and outdoor furniture and the batches can look like mud. The Spotted Lanternfly can have a negative impact on crops and habitats, and you’re encourage to report any sightings to the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
