Settlement is approved with former Charleston Police Chief

The Charleston City Council unanimously voted to approve a $375,00 settlement in a case involving former police chief James “Tyke” Hunt Monday. Eyewitness News said the move resolves a suit filed against the city, Hunt and former chief of detectives Richie Basford by Chelsea McCoy, who alleged sexual misconduct and abuse of power by Hunt, who was a sergeant at the time. McCoy alleged Hunt tampered with her polygraph results during her departmental application process and had improper interactions with her in the polygraph examination room and the former chief’s city hall office. Hunt resigned from his position as chief on Aug. 18, 2023, citing personal and medical reasons.
