Suspect faces robbery charges despite leaving a bank with no money

A man has been arrested in connection with a Tuesday bank robbery in Charleston. Police said 56-year old Bobby Ross of Charleston has been charged with first-degree robbery following an incident at the Truist Bank on Tennessee Avenue. A news release from the Charleston Police Department said a suspect entered the bank and asked a teller about loading funds onto a gift card before saying “this is a robbery” while keeping a hand inside his shirt to indicate he had a gun. Investigators said “after a few seconds, the suspect ran out of the bank” and “no money was taken during the robbery attempt.”
Officers reviewed surveillance footage and later arrested Ross.
