The West Virginia Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers in West Virginia are coming together to form a larger group called Education West Virginia. Eyewitness News said that despite being two separate unions, they have worked together in the past; most notably during the teacher’s strike in 2018 where teachers fought for better health insurance and pay raises. The new union won’t be official until September 1, but the two organizations said in a press release they will still be working together in the meantime.
