A man on an expired visa is accused of marrying a West Virginia woman to get a Green Card

A citizen of India illegally living in Greenbrier County admitted to a marriage scheme to dodge United States immigration laws. Federal prosecutors said 29-year old Aakash Makwana pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft. He came to the US on a non-immigrant visa in 2019 for culinary and hospitality work. Makwana remained in the country after his visa expired a year later. Prosecutors said Makwana married a U.S. citizen for $10,000 in an attempt to obtain a Green Card as he worked at a White Sulphur Springs convenience store. He added that person’s name to his bank accounts and utility bills and submitted a false residential lease agreement, forging a residential property manager’s signature. Prosecutors said the scheme failed and Makwana filed a petition claiming he was the victim of domestic violence and emotional abuse from his partner. Eyewitness News said sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 26.
