A multimillion-dollar sports complex slated for part of the Charleston Town Center is “on pause” due to inflation and budget costs. Kanawha County Commissioner Lance Wheeler told Eyewitness News that inflation’s effect on construction prices and the county’s budget have played a role in a pause on construction of the Capital Sports Center. Wheeler cited a $1 million increase in the jail bill, $500,000 increase in PEIA costs and a larger budget than expected for a renovation project at the Kanawha County Judicial Building. “That’s put us in a point where we have to step back and be prudent with the finances of the county and make sure we’re doing things that are beneficial to the community,” Wheeler said on ARC Appalachia. The commissioner said there is no timetable for the project for now while they look for outside funding. Wheeler said they may have to scale things back as well.+
