The Kanawha County Commission has allocated more funds to go towards assessing abandoned structures to see if they can be saved. Eyewitness News said the grant awarded is 1.2 million dollars and the Brownfields program aims to reutilize abandoned buildings. This comes after the Kanawha County Commission allocated 600,000 to do assessment work in 2022 through 2024. 49 projects were completed with 3,200 acres of property being assessed but this new funding is going toward a more specific focus.
Commissioners said they’d also like to see these revitalized buildings go towards improving the housing crisis.
